NLU’s Doug Schreder, Ph.D., was featured in the “Who’s Who in Executive Education” feature of the Daily Herald newspaper’s Business Ledger.
Schreder, an associate professor, teaches economics and strategic management in NLU’s MBA and Master of Health Services Administration programs.
Like all of NLU’s business professors, he emphasizes real-world knowledge which students can use the next day in their jobs. To do so, he draws upon his own experience from corporate environments, a family business, an entrepreneurial venture and a Barcelona international business school.
“We want our courses to be applicable,” he said.
The text of the article reads:
Doug Schreder, Ph.D., brings experience from corporate environments, a family business, a 10-year entrepreneurial venture and a Barcelona international business school to his post as associate professor at National Louis University.
Though he once served as assistant dean in NLU’s business program, Schreder has spent the past 14 years pursuing the thing he loves best—teaching. He teaches economics and strategic management in NLU’s MBA and MHA (Master of Health Services Administration) programs. Some of the classes are offered on-site at Lutheran General Hospital and Lurie Children’s Hospital; others take place at NLU’s Wheeling, Lisle and Chicago campuses and online.
“We want our courses to be applicable ,” he said. “We say that what you learn in class today, you can apply tomorrow in your work setting. There’s less of an emphasis on the theoretical, though courses do require you to calculate ratios, interpret financial statements, and the like, with appropriate rigor. The analytical and critical thinking components also make up an important part of the program.”
In teaching, Schreder draws upon his multifaceted business career. After earning his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toledo, he worked in industrial engineering for a large multi-national manufacturer in the computer and machine tool industry. He next entered sales management and engineering for a family business in plastics manufacturing. Then he moved to Colorado, where he founded and operated a real estate brokerage for 10 years.
He traveled to Barcelona, Spain, to earn an MBA at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de la Empresa, then took a post as assistant dean at the European Business School’s Barcelona campus. He stayed on for five years, spent a year in France, then returned to the U.S. to do consulting work for corporations, mainly on software applications to manage quality control.
He earned his Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, then came to NLU.
Schreder has been active in researching and publishing case studies and presenting them at international conferences through the World Association for Case Study Research and Analysis (WACRA).
