Getting the Most Out of Your Spring Break. . . There’s Still Time By Melissa Simmons, Graduate Assistant for the Office of Student Experience

shutterstock_380256046There’s still time to get the most out of your spring break before classes resume on Monday! The days are getting longer and buds are starting to sprout. It’s beginning to feel a lot like spring ─ except for the 50 mph gusts of wind on Michigan Avenue.

You don’t have to go far to get some much needed rest and relaxation. NLU’s Student Experience is dedicated to providing you with the solution to an alternative spring break. Try one of these tips to rest your brain and reinvigorate yourself for the upcoming spring quarter.

Get some R & R- Take this time to decompress and do whatever helps you relax. Sleep in on the weekends, enjoy a hot cup of tea while you binge-watch your favorite series or read a new book.

At-home spa- Treat yourself to salon quality services for free, or almost-free.

  • Mix ½ cup honey, 2 Tbsp. coconut oil and 2 Tbsp. olive oil to create a moisturizing hair mask that your tresses will be thankful for.
  • Combine 1 egg white, ½ cup beer and 2 tsp. fresh lime juice to brighten up that post-winter skin.
  • Buy a gel top coat at any convenience store and add to your signature color to give yourself a professional looking mani/pedi that will last for weeks.

Spring cleaning- Put down the remote, procrastinators! Get a head start on the cleaning you’ve put off for months. Simple living and environmental friendliness are the current domestic trends. Now is the time to clean out your closet and make room for new pieces. Donate gently-used clothing to your nearest thrift store.

Take advantage of free events in the city- check out for a detailed list of events this month.

Get active-Studies have shown the more active a person is, the more endorphins they let off. So get moving and get happy! Take a dance class, go for a walk or bike ride with a friend, dance around in your room to your favorite song or try viewing galleries in the Art Institute.

Get Artsy- NLU students get in to the Art Institute for free, and that includes seeing the Van Gogh exhibit. Get your art on with a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit! Feeling artsy after? Grab a friend, check for a deal on an evening paint party. Novices welcome!

Volunteer- This down time presents a chance to give back to your community or favorite organization. Nothing helps you feel better about yourself than supporting a good cause. has a complete list of volunteer opportunities around the city.

Don’t forget about school- Make sure to register for the next quarter, order your books, buy any supplies you will need or have run out of and check out the syllabus expectations early.
