It’s not often that a mother and daughter duo graduate from college on the same day, and rarer still that they graduate with the same degree.
Demetria Randle, 47, and her elder daughter Raven Hoffman, 24, will be doing exactly that, however, at National Louis University’s Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 24 at Chicago’s Arie Crown Theater. Each will receive a B.A. in Psychology degree.
Randle attended Northeastern Illinois University from 1989 to 1991, but then quit school to raise her two daughters. She describes herself as a working single mom, employed at TASC., Inc., a social services agency just south of downtown Chicago.
She returned to college in 2012 by enrolling at NLU, and plans to seek work in a school setting as an assistant dean or school guidance counselor.
Hoffman attended Marian College in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, then transferred to NLU in 2015. She works as a manager at AT&T, and wants to start her career in a hospital setting as a mental health worker or case manager, possibly working with adolescents and/or adults. She’s also open to working for a company in the area of addictions treatment for adolescents and/or adults.
Throughout their time at NLU, the two took only one class together–statistics, with instructor Ellen Deinzer.
Both mother and daughter are looking forward to graduation day.
“This is a blessing, amazing, awesome,” Demetria said.
Congratulations to both!
