Univision has profiled NLU alum and current high school teacher Kenneth Bares, who said he was inspired to go into teaching because school was one of the only places he felt safe during a childhood marked by poverty and instability.
The Spanish-language network’s “Nuestros Maestros” or “Our Teachers” series did a segment on Bares. Another segment featured Carina Bailon, a Pathways at NLU student, talking about her former Elk Grove High School teacher who was named Teacher of the Year by the Illinois State Board of Education last year.
In the segment on Kenneth Bares, who earned his Master of Education in Administration and Supervision at National Louis University in 2016, Bares explained that he lost his mother at a young age, was homeless for awhile and faced other very difficult circumstances. He feels that school was the only place where he felt safe and protected, and he wants to extend that feeling to his own students.
He teaches 11th-grade physics at Senn High School on Chicago’s North side.
In the segment on teacher Ricky Castro, Carina Bailon wears an NLU t-shirt and talks about National Louis University. Castro had been her teacher when she studied at Elk Grove High School.
