Veterans Day, which falls on Sunday, Nov. 11 this year, gives us all a chance to step up and be appreciative of the hardships and sacrifices America’s military members and veterans have made for our freedoms.
All National Louis University students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the Nov. 5-9 activities leading up to Veterans Day, with a special welcome for student veterans and military-connected students.
To fund the events, National Louis University’s Veterans and Military Program is raffling off a harvest-themed gift basket full of goodies such as coffee, cookies, candy, bath products, headphones, mini pumpkins and more. Purchase $10 raffle tickets at the Veterans Resource Center, Room 5044 on the Chicago campus, 122 S. Michigan Avenue, by noon Oct. 31 for a 1 p.m. drawing that day.
The activities include:
Monday-Thursday, Nov. 5-8, Snack and Write
Write a note of appreciation to a veteran and enjoy a small snack. NLU staff will deliver the notes to hospitalized veterans for Veterans Day. Held in the Chicago campus second-floor lobby from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday, at Lisle campus Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wheeling campus Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 6, Game Day
Play Xbox, Play Station or board games and enjoy snacks from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Veterans Resources Center, Room 5044 on Chicago campus.
Wednesday, Nov. 7, Light a candle, honor a veteran
Assemble at 4:50 p.m. at NLU’s Chicago campus, and we will walk across the street to the Crown Fountain area in Millennium Park, at the northeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Monroe Street, Chicago. During a brief ceremony beginning at 5 p.m., we will honor each branch of the military, and participants can light a candle for themselves, or any loved one, living or deceased, who has served in that branch. Bring your own candle if possible, though we will have some on hand. The ceremony will wrap up with a tribute to all the branches. Rain date: Thursday, Nov. 8.
Friday, Nov. 9, Social night
Drop by the Veterans Resources Center, Chicago campus Room 5044, for catered food, music and a chance to get to know fellow members of the NLU community.
