‘Christmas Miracle’: Alum Adopts Baby She Met During Hurricane Baby had been living in a car and dad couldn't provide for her

When Hurricane Harvey was ravaging Houston in 2017, National Louis University alum Bernada Baker ’15  went to drop off donations. Through that act, Baker, who earned her Ph.D. in Community Psychology at NLU, met a baby who has changed her life.

The father, who was living with the baby girl in a car and could not provide for her, agreed to allow Baker to adopt her.  After a long wait, a judge approved that adoption on Dec. 18, and Baker became the official parent of 23-month-old Bella.

KHOU-TV in Houston reported the happy event, which included Baker, Bella and their family members gathering around the judge for a celebration photo.

“This is my first official Christmas as a mom on paper, so this is a Christmas miracle,”  Baker told the reporter.
